When Logan and Abby were talking with me about possible locations to shoot at for different parts of their wedding experience, Abby mentioned the Salt Flats in Utah and she mentioned it without even knowing that they were on my photography bucket list of locations. Shooting there was really everything I hoped it would be and windy!! As Logan and I drove out there, we felt like we were driving forever (which we were) and I wondered if it was really going to be worth it, and when we finally pulled into that parking lot, I know it was going to be SOOOOO worth every minute of that drive and my aching behind (thanks childbirth). Because Logan and Abby are also from southeast Idaho, we split their formal session into two different days because we knew we wanted to get that sunset light at both the Idaho Falls temple and the Salt Flats. If you missed their first look from the temple, be sure to go back and check those out here. And while you’re at it, check out their engagement session in the mountains too!!
We just so happened to be at the Salt Flats in the middle of rain storms surrounding on every side and the smoke seemed to be choking out the sun and we really weren’t sure what the sunset would even be like. We started shooting first with all of those clouds surrounding us and the wind whipping at Abby’s dress, veil and hair. As we kept shooting and we knew the sun was about to set, the sky went from dark grey to the most amazing pinks and purples!! We shot as fast as we could, thinking that once the sunset was gone from the one side that we’d be out of luck, but as the colors started to fade from that side, we turned around the other side was lit up even more beautiful than the first side. And as we finished up with that side and the colors were turning back to their grey tones, we turned back and the colors were even more vibrant on that first side again. I really haven’t ever seen a sunset like that!! It just really wanted to show off that night.
As you look through these photos, you will see a mix of cloudy stormy photos and beautiful sunset photos. They each made the perfect backdrop against the white, reflective sand!! Pair all of that with Logan and Abby in their full wedding gear, minus Abby’s shoes, and it made for one epic shoot!! (JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE IT IN VIDEO!!!) Leave us a comment and let us know what you like better, the storm clouds or that cotton candy sunset!!
