Paige’s Kelly Canyon senior photos are some of my favorite senior photos ever…..and I’ll tell you why! It’s not just that her outits are perfect, or that she’s stunning and fun and easy to work with! It’s also because Paige booked her senior session with me during the summer BEFORE her senior year ever started. And I wish I could tell every senior to do the same. exact. thing. If you want pops of green, flourishing flowers, warm sunset light just like these? Then SUMMER is the prime time to schedule your senior session.
When Is the Best Time to Take Senior Photos in Southeastern Idaho? (Hint: Don’t Wait Until Spring!)
I love photographing seniors. It’s a big milestone! A time when decisions, celebrations, and memories are in the making. And I know that one of those memorable moments includes taking their senior photos. It might seem logical to wait until the final stretch of senior year to schedule these photos. After all, it is closer to their graduation. But since we live in Idaho, we have to remember that Spring time? It is a tough season for sessions! Here’s why:

Unpredictable Weather: Spring in Idaho can be downright moody. One day it’s 60 and sunny, the next it’s raining or snowing. That makes it nearly impossible to schedule outdoor shoots with confidence — and rescheduling can get tricky with coordinating my schedule and the busy schedule of an almost-graduated high school senior.

Lackluster Landscapes: In the early spring months (March–May), Idaho is still shaking off winter. Trees are bare, grass is dull, and flowers haven’t yet bloomed. You won’t get those vibrant, green, sun-drenched backgrounds that make senior portraits pop. If you want photos that showcase vibrant colors and optimism, spring just isn’t the season (as much as we might think of it as that!)

Yearbook Deadlines: Another thing to note: Many schools have fall or early winter deadlines for submitting senior portraits. Waiting until spring can mean missing those deadlines entirely — which could mean a generic senior photo for the yearbook (boring!!).
Instead, think of Summer & Fall
By contrast, late summer through early October offers ideal conditions:

Golden Light: The lighting during Idaho’s late summer evenings is warm and flattering — perfect for glowing light and warm skin tones.

Full, Green Landscapes: The trees are lush, the wildflowers are blooming, and natural settings look their absolute best.

More Flexibility: Many students have more availability in the summer before the school year ramps up. That makes scheduling and planning much easier! Not to mention, booking your session early means you get the best choice of dates and locations, while still leaving room for rescheduling the session if we need it.
Parents, this means that as soon as your teen’s junior year ends — you should already be reaching out to schedule their senior session! I promise that not only will you be happier with the photos, but you’ll also feel relieved to have taken care of it early so you can focus on bigger things as they prepare for the final weeks and days before graduation!
