Have you ever been editing an image and you notice part of it has a blue/cool tint or hue in some parts of the image? This used to happen to me and I either didn’t notice it until later or I didn’t know how to fix it. Plus, I didn’t know where or how to learn to remove it and it must be hard right?! WRONG!!! When I finally realized this trick, I wanted to kick myself because it is SO easy!!
Most often I see the blue tones in either a dress, tux, or other darker areas in an image. The colors that to me seem to be affected the most by the blue tint is the whites, greys, and blacks. As I was editing our recent wedding, I noticed it was happening a lot on our groom’s tux and it was driving me crazy! I knew that his suit was more of a grey than the blue it was appearing in the photos. It isn’t something that I think is totally obvious, but once you know to look for it, you will see it!
Take a look at the image on the left (before), do you see the blue hue to his tux and to the bottom of the doors? Now look at the image on the right (after). See the difference?!
Here’s how to fix it- in Lightroom find the HSL/Color/B&W section in the Develop module. We will be working in the color part of it. Click on the blue slider and pull the saturation down!! It will look like this-
Sometimes the image will need the saturation to be pulled way down and other times it will only need a little bit. If you aren’t sure if your image is being affected with the blue hues, just pull the slider down to check! Sometimes you will get other color hues happening in your images. Use this same technique with the other colors you need to remove! Just watch out for the reds and oranges- those ones are in skin tones and will desaturate the subjects skin color.
One thing to watch out for though is any other blue (or other color you are taking out) in the image will be desaturated too. If the tie is blue or there is blue in the bouquet, it will change too and those are times that I would just leave it!
Here are a few more examples!
Watch the blue tint on the dress and on the metal designs on the stairs.
Another comparison on the suit!
