What to Wear to Fall Engagements

I can’t even tell you how much I love fall!! I actually love summer weather a little bit more, but fall has cardigans, scarves, sweaters, Starbucks white hot chocolate, football games and you guessed it pumpkin EVERYTHING!! For us, fall is busy with engagement sessions and we wanted to share a few tips for brides (and anyone else taking pictures this fall) while they consider what they should wear and how to make their outfits match what the leaves and fall colors are saying. Before we jump right into outfits consider this- the hardest part about planning a fall engagement session and wanting those fall colors is the timing. Timing is key because the leaves have actually started turning already in different places. If you haven’t noticed, we LOVE shooting in the mountains. The mountains just make me happy! I love the look of being outside with the one you love, just exploring and being adventurous. But up in these beautiful mountains- we were in Grand Targhee last week- we noticed colors already changing! You will want to consider where you are going for your session and make sure you have a tentative idea on when the colors will be changing. The weather also plays a critical role in this because here in Southeast Idaho, that wind we get all too often can take leaves down really quickly! Plus, as it becomes more and more “fall,” the weather gets a little chillier! Be prepared for that part of the weather.

  1. Outfit with layers in mind. I am seriously in love with fall wardrobes because of cardigans and sweaters. I love the way a cardigan looks over shirts or button ups. Consider adding a cardigan to your outfit to give it the complete fall look. Layers also add dimension and texture to your look in pictures. It’s always a good thing!! The cardigan will also help you stay warmer than just a shirt- an added bonus! For guys and layering, wear a button up and then a sweater over it. That will make it so the collar is still visible and a little bit of the button up can be seen at the bottom of the sweater. This is one of my favorite looks for guys in the fall. Brides- don’t think you can’t wear that cute new dress you got! Just make sure the dress doesn’t look too springy with your fall colors going on and that you won’t be shivering 🙂 One final thought on this is to simply make sure you match the season. It doesn’t really work to be wearing shorts in these images with the fall colors. We want your images to be timeless, so dress appropriately for the season!
  2. Scarves and Jewelry. This topic kind of goes along with the idea of layering. You want to make sure to finish off your look with some accessories! For me, I love my big plaid blanket scarf from Target (the dollar section has a blanket scarf right not that I’m eyeing pretty hard). That is a perfect fall accessory. But I also know that if I wanted to wear a big statement necklace, the scarf would cover it up or it would make it a little too cluttered. When you have a scarf on, don’t forget to wear some earrings to give a little bit of something to your final look! I’m obsessed with my gold bar earrings… also from Target, I have a problem, I know. Bracelets and watches are also really great accessories to add to your look to complete it. I’m a sucker for guys wearing watches. We have Arvo watches that we love. Watches give guys a perfect finishing look on the wedding day and for engagements!
  3. Hair and makeup. I love when my bride wants to change up her hair part of the way through engagements. It gives her the ability to have 2 different looks from their images and lets her feel like herself. My big chunky blanket scarf doesn’t touch my hair or make it look like it’s full of static because my hair is short. If you want to wear that big scarf, consider switching up your hairstyle and pulling some of it back. This is really fun and playful as well! Don’t do this though unless you feel like it is true to you!! I always want to touch on makeup when we talk about what to wear for engagements because makeup plays a huge role in images. Honestly, day to day I don’t wear a ton of makeup. Some days I decide to get all done up, but more often I just put on some mascara and touch up my eyebrows. Anytime we have our pictures taken, though, I always have a makeup artist do my makeup. It adds SO much to have your makeup professionally done for pictures. Pictures flatten your makeup so you need to wear extra in pictures and makeup artists know how to take care of you! If you are not interested in having your makeup done, be sure to wear false eyelashes. Eyelashes are key!!! They make your eyes really pop!

Overall, just make sure you love what you are wearing!! Feel confident, comfortable and like 100 bucks in what you wear and I promise it shines through!! For more outfit inspiration, check out our Pinterest board!!
